All About Colored Gemstones

Color Treated Diamonds

Many individuals are starting to favor the fancy, vivid tinted gems over the classic transparent, or white, diamonds. Some gemstones are discovered in their natural colorings when they are mined, others can be colored by gemologists and jewelers during a specialized process. In order to make them more affordable for the average consumer, specialists have begun color treating diamonds of lesser grades in order to take a less appealing yellow or brown tinted gem and make it into the most stunning, vibrant colored diamond.

Colored diamonds can be treated with a process referred to as irradiation, which uses a very high heat system to change the color of a diamond. Other diamonds are treated by just painting.

Fancy Color Gems

While many diamonds are usually inspected and valued based on their colorless qualities, there are still quite a few people who like the fancy colored diamonds which come in vivid hues of greens, yellow, red, pink and all the different shades in between.

Some colored diamonds are that way naturally. If a diamond has nitrogen in it, it often has a yellow tint to the stone and thus will be classified as yellow diamonds. If the gemstone has been effected by radiation, the gem may turn green.

Other colored diamonds which have been treated to obtain their color allows people with lower budgets to purchase the fancy colored diamonds. Specialist jewelers have found means to alter a gemstones color to almost any strength of shade that is desired. The grading process for colored diamonds is slightly different than that of the transparent diamond. The first part of the color grading process is the identification of the primary color range, eg blue, pink etc.. Secondly, they are graded based on the intensity of that color. A very intense, naturally colored diamond is more rare than a less intense diamond, and therefore more expensive. In almost every case, a natural stone will out grade an enhanced version.

Synthetic Diamonds

Most diamonds are found and mined by miners, but more recently, scientists have come up with ways to create synthetic diamonds. While a synthetic diamond is still a "real diamond", they are created within a laboratory instead of by nature in a mine.

Color Names

Because fancy colored diamonds can be found in so many different shades, it can often be hard to interpret the name of the diamonds color. Often, you'll find two colors labeling the shade of a diamond, such as greenish blue. Each name has a primary color description, and some have a secondary color description If another color is mentioned with an 'ish', that would be the secondary color. Some stones have equal parts of color such as red/ brown. There is no secondary color just a perfect half and half of each. .

A popular trend today is to opt for yellow diamond engagement rings, from the range of canary yellow diamonds and other fancy yellow diamonds.
